Stephon Gilmore injury: Bills CB avoids short-term IR

Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore won’t land on injured reserve, but he will miss extensive playing time for a team in need of some good luck on the injury front.

Stephon Gilmore will not be heading to injured reserve, Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone confirmed Monday. Gilmore is expected to miss up to eight weeks with a fractured wrist that will require surgery. The cornerback is a candidate for short-term IR, which would allow him to return to practice after six weeks and play after eight. Marrone believes that Gilmore can return sooner than eight weeks, however, and doesn't want the corner to miss game action if he is healthy.

Gilmore suffered the injury during Saturday's preseason loss to the Washington Redskins. He was immediately taken to the locker room for examination, where apparently the news wasn't good.

Without Gilmore, Leodis McKelvin appears to be the Bills' top cornerback for the time being. Behind him, players such as Ron Brooks, Nickell Robey, Justin Rogers and Crezdon Butler will be competing for playing time. The Bills' secondary could be on track for a rough start to the season, with safety Jairus Byrd only just now returning from his extensive contract holdout.
