Geno Smith yet to throw interception at Jets training camp

The rookie is looking good thus far in his competition with The Sanchise.

Geno Smith is showing one trait Mark Sanchez has never displayed. He understands to throw the ball only at those in the same color uniform.

Thus far at New York Jets training camp, Smith has yet to throw an interception, covering eight practices, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. Now, this doesn't mean Smith will become Tom Brady, but it's a nice showing for a youngster who dropped to the second round unexpectedly this past April.

With the Green and White scrimmage being played on Saturday, both Sanchez and Smith are looking to stake claims to the top of the depth chart. Per the article:

“Everything has been competitive, but the level of competition will be raised,” the rookie said. “Every single guy wants to go out and perform well in the scrimmage. You want to be that guy, when you go back and watch tape, the coaches are praising you, saying, ‘Hey, this is the type of guy we need here.’”

On the negative side, Smith has been taking too many sacks. The rookie says it’s because he knows he can’t be hit, but that’s not the best logic considering in real games he won’t have that luxury.

Cimini reports the quarterbacks are neck-and-neck for the starting spot, with Smith outplaying Sanchez but having less experience. If you’re the Jets, why not throw Smith into the fire if he is showing much more upside?

With Sanchez mercifully on the last year of his deal, the chances of him becoming a darling in Gotham long-term are about the equivalent of Kim Kardashian earning a master’s degree from Yale.

With expectations very low for Gang Green, Smith would at least pump some life and excitement into MetLife Stadium. Even with the customary early struggles that most rookies go through, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to let Smith get his feet wet on a team most believe is going nowhere fast.
