Ravens vs. Rams: Clemens pulling ahead in backup QB race

St. Louis finished out the preseason on a strong note, beating the defending Super Bowl champs.

The St. Louis Rams closed out their exhibition slate by taking care of the Baltimore Ravens, beating them 24-21 at the Edwards Jones Dome on Thursday night.

St. Louis sat Sam Bradford for the evening, choosing to take a look at backup quarterbacks Kellen Clemens and Austin Davis. Clemens played well, completing 13 of 18 passes for 188 yards. Davis wasn’t nearly as efficient, going 6-for-13 but tossing two touchdowns in the process.

Benny Cunningham had a big day on the ground for the Rams, gaining 76 yards on eight carries. Over at Turf Show Times, Ryan Van Bibber talked about the quarterback battle going on behind Bradford and who pulled ahead in the race last night:

Both quarterbacks had better nights. Kellen Clemens completed 13-of-18 passes for 188 yards. He brought on one of his two sacks himself in a classic coverage sack. Austin Davis was 6-for-13, but also threw a pair of touchdown passes. Neither player was intercepted. So which one is the No. 2? I'd lean toward Clemens, but we'll have to wait for Fisher to make the call.

For the Ravens, they end the preseason 2-2 and now get ready to defend their championship. Playing virtually nobody of note, Baltimore surely isn’t concerned about the loss to St. Louis in August.

Over at Baltimore Beatdown, Jason Butt writes about Caleb Hanie’s chances to stick on the roster:

Hanie finished the night 20-39 for 272 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He’s hoping the Ravens decide to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, something the Ravens haven’t done in recent years.

The Ravens open the season in Peyton Manning's house against the Denver Broncos on Thursday night while the Rams rest up before facing the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.
