Ed Dickson injury: Ravens TE out with strained hamstring

Ravens tight end Ed Dickson was removed from practice Sunday due to strained hamstring. The Ravens are being cautious after losing Dennis Pitta for the year with a fractured hip.

USA TODAY Sports

Ed Dickson sustained a hamstring injury Sunday and was unable to finish practice with the Baltimore Ravens, according to the Baltimore Sun. There is no word yet on the severity of the injury, though head coach John Harbaugh did not seem overly concerned after practice. Via the Sun:

“Ed Dickson, his hamstring grabbed a little bit, so we pulled him out for precautionary reasons,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll take a look at it [Sunday] and see how it looks.”

The Ravens may be particularly cautious with Dickson, who is expected to start at tight end after the team lost Dennis Pitta for the season with a fractured hip. Pitta was expected to take on a major role in the offense this season. Pitta's responsibilities are now Dickson's, as the Ravens try to complement a depleted receiving corps.

Dickson has been productive in the past. Drafted ahead of Pitta in the 2010 NFL Draft, he was the more targeted of the two players before Pitta's ascension during the Ravens' Super Bowl season. In 2011, Dickson had 54 receptions for 528 yards and five touchdowns, good enough to make him the fourth-most productive pass catcher on the team that season.

Dickson has stayed healthy throughout his three-year NFL career, though Ravens fans are certainly hoping his current hamstring issue does not become a nagging problem. If Dickson is forced to sit, the Ravens will have to turn to Billy Bajema and Visanthe Shiancoe, who had a combined zero receptions in 2012.
