Trent Richardson likely to miss Browns preseason opener

Trent Richardson will likely skip Thursday’s preseason opener between the Browns and the Rams due to a lingering shin injury.

Eric P. Mull-US PRESSWIRE

Trent Richardson will likely be held out of the Cleveland Browns' preseason opener against the St. Louis Rams on Thursday, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Richardson has been held out of team drills since Thursday after being kicked in his right shin during practice.

According to Cabot, the Browns are simply being taking precautionary measures, but the news once again brings to light Richardson’s injury struggles in his rookie year and through the offseason. He dealt with multiple injuries last season, and hamstring issues that have held him out of the bulk of the Browns’ offseason training activities. Richardson is also dealing with a strain in the same shin that was kicked.

The Browns have made no secret of their desire to use Richardson as a workhorse back this season. Of course, that will depend on the running back staying healthy. Being held out of drills and preseason games doesn’t inspire much confidence, even as a precaution, though it does indicate how much the Browns value Richardson.

As a rookie, Richardson carried the ball 267 times for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns, and had 51 receptions for 367 yards and one touchdown.
