Geno Atkins, Bengals ‘nowhere close’ on extension

Cincinnati and its star defensive lineman have plenty of ground to cover in negotiations.

The Cincinnati Bengals and defensive tackle Geno Atkins aren't close on agreeing to a contract extension, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Atkins was reportedly speaking with his agents for a while after practice on Tuesday.

La Canfora believes the Bengals will end up slapping Atkins with the franchise tag after his deal expires at the end of this season instead of making him the highest paid player ever at his position. Atkins has been an incredibly productive player for Cincinnati since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 draft.

Atkins has been named an All-Pro in each of the past two seasons, racking up 12.5 sacks in 2012 from the defensive tackle position, most in the league.

Over at Cincy Jungle, Josh Kirkendall gives his thoughts on a potential deal with Atkins and the Bengals coming together.

The last we’ve heard was that there was optimism that a deal would eventually get done, maybe prior to the start of the regular season. However, we’ve routinely heard that if a deal is struck, there is a significant dollar amount that must be bridged.
