Arrelious Benn injury: Eagles place WR on injured reserve

Benn has been placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL, likely ending his season.

USA TODAY Sports

A day after tearing his ACL, Arrelious Benn has officially been place on injured reserve by the Philadelphia Eagles, the team tweeted Wednesday. The move to IR means that Benn's season is likely over. Technically, the wide receiver could be designated for return after Week 8 thanks to a provision agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA in 2012, but given the nature of Benn's injury, it would be a shock to see him play in 2013.

Benn was vying for a spot on the Eagles' 53-man roster before the injury, and saw his odds of making the team improve after Jeremy Maclin also went down with a torn ACL at the start of training camp. Unfortunately, Benn's injury ends what would have been a valiant comeback attempt from an underwhelming and injury-plagued start to his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Benn's best season came in 2011, when he caught 30 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns.

A second-round pick in 2010, Benn was traded to the Eagles this offseason for a sixth-round pick coming off a year during which he played in just eight games and caught four passes for 26 yards. He will become an unrestricted free agent in 2014, so there is a chance he never officially plays in an Eagles uniform.

Benn's injuries continue what has been an awful offseason for Eagles wide receivers. In addition to Maclin's injury, Riley Cooper embroiled himself in controversy by being caught on tape at a Kenny Chesney concert uttering a racial slur.
