Phillip Thomas injury: Redskins rookie dealing with foot sprain

The rookie safety suffered an injury during the first quarter of the Redskins’ preseason win over the Titans.

USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins may have picked up the 22-21 win over the Tennessee Titans Thursday night, but the preseason opener proved costly. Several players got banged up during the game, including rookie safety Phillip Thomas, who suffered a mid-foot sprain, according to CSN Washington.

Thomas, who the team selected in the fourth round of April's NFL draft, was hurt while tackling Shonn Greene during the game's first quarter. He landed awkwardly on his left foot, and was later seen leaving the locker room wearing a walking boot. He also suffered a shoulder stinger on the play, but said it was not a concern.

Knowledge on the extent of the rookie’s injury and a timeline for his return will likely have to wait until Saturday, when the team returns to practice after a day off on Friday.

Thomas's injury was one of several suffered by Redskins players Thursday night. Linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough separated his shoulder while attempting to make a tackle in the fourth quarter, and wide receiver Donte' Stallworth aggravated a hamstring injury he's been battling for most of training camp.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III, still recovering from last season's torn ACL, sat the game out.
