Colt McCoy injury: 49ers QB to have MRI

The veteran quarterback suffered a stinger during the 49ers’ preseason loss to the Broncos on Thursday night.

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colt McCoy will have an MRI to determine the extent of a neck and shoulder injury suffered during his team's 10-6 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos, according to CSN Bay Area.

McCoy, who is competing for the No. 2 quarterback spot, said he suffered a stinger when he was tackled for a one-yard loss during the team's seventh drive of the game. He stayed in for the remainder of the series, which ended three plays later when his pass attempt to A.J. Jenkins was intercepted.

The four-year veteran, who joined the team this offseason after three seasons with the Cleveland Browns, famously suffered a nerve injury in the same shoulder during the 2010 BCS National Championship, which his Texas Longhorns lost to Alabama. McCoy said the latest injury is nowhere near as severe as that one, which was still affecting him over a year after.

McCoy played in three series during Thursday’s preseason game, going 3-of-7 for 41 yards and the interception.
