Ryan Mallett head injury: Patriots QB helped off field, return questionable

New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett went down with an apparent head injury against the Philadelphia Eagles

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

New England Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett left Friday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a head injury, according to Jim Corbett of USA Today. Mallett's return is questionable, and Corbett said he thought Mallett looked "woozy" after being helped to the sideline by team staff.

Mallett was getting some serious playing time after he took over for Tom Brady following the first two possessions. The Patriots are hoping to see him develop into a strong quarterback, and he finished the day having completed 9 of 18 passes for 97 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Brady managed a crisp 7-for-8 for 65 yards and a touchdown, predictably making it look easy.

Tim Tebow took over for Mallett when he went down late in the second quarter. It's anybody's guess as to whether or not Mallett would have continued to take reps when the second half got underway, but regardless, he received a good amount of playing time in the Patriots' first preseason game.

Further information on his head injury likely won’t be available until he passes the required tests after the game.
