Geno Smith injury: No fracture for Jets QB

The rookie rolled an ankle in his NFL debut but nothing was broken.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith did not sustain a fractured ankle against the Lions on Friday, he told reporters after the game. Smith went on to say he expects to play in the Jets' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week.

Smith went down with an apparent ankle injury early in the third quarter, cutting short his pro debut. He was trying to escape pressure and rolled his ankle to the inside and immediately limped to the sidelines. There he was examined with his cleats off by team trainers, and he did not return to action.

Smith was 6-for-7 for 47 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, and likely would have seen more playing time throughout the third quarter. The rookie is battling with Mark Sanchez for the starting quarterback job. Sanchez completed 10 of 13 passes for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception and will likely be the starter heading into Week 2 of the preseason, whether Smith is healthy or not.
