Eagles vs. Redskins 2013: Robert Griffin III ‘rusty’ in lopsided loss

Philadelphia didn’t waste any time to begin 2013, beating Washington handily in its building.

In their season opener, the Philadelphia Eagles caught the attention of a football nation by hammering the Washington Redskins 33-27 at FedEx Field under new head coach Chip Kelly's fast-paced system.

The Eagles were dominant, leading 33-7 midway through the third quarter on a night that was supposed to be about the return of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin, who had suffered a torn ACL exactly eight months prior. Unfortunately for Washington, Griffin looked rusty, throwing two interceptions that proved very costly.

Other than Kelly and his high-octane offense, the star of the game was LeSean McCoy who rushed for a game-high 184 yards on 31 carries.

Over at Bleeding Green Nation, Brandon Lee Gowton was giving love to a defensive player on a night which will be remembered for the other side of the ball:

Trent Cole played really well and proved his doubters wrong. Some said he was done. Others said he couldn't play in the 3-4. Well tonight he looked great. Forced fumble, safety, constant pressure, run defense, you name it. Trent looked like the beast he used to be.

The happy feelings weren’t flowing on Hogs Haven, where expectations were not me by Griffin:

Robert Griffin III started off rusty, to say the least. It's hard to tell if he wasn't trusting his knee or if it was still bothering him, but he wasn't driving off of it to create the necessary torque for him to throw the ball with accuracy and velocity. Because he wasn't driving off his back leg, he wasn't turning over his front one, making his mechanics completely out of wack.

The Eagles will now return home to face the San Diego Chargers while the Redskins travel to take on the Green Bay Packers.
