The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-16 on Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon, running their record to 2-0 while handing Dallas its first defeat of 2013.

Kansas City topped Dallas in one of the better games on Sunday.

Kansas City used a much improved defense to stifle the Cowboys in the second half, limiting Jason Garrett’s team to a pair of field goals. The Chiefs scored 10 points in that time, just enough to eke out a win at home in all-red uniforms.
Over at Blogging The Boys, Dave Halprin talks about a key play that changed the tenor of the game. Leading 10-7 and with 3rd and Goal from the Chiefs 9-yard line, Dallas decided to throw a screen pass instead of going to a man-to-man matchup on the outside between Brandon Flowers and Dez Bryant.
The result? Nothing doing, and a field goal to make the score 13-7. In the game, Bryant had nine catches for 141 yards and a score.
If there is one thing the Cowboys do poorly on offense it’s run screens, so naturally that’s what they choose to do. Instead of hitting the Chiefs with slants or back-shoulder passes, plays that had been working all day, or even a fade to Dez, they decide to run a play they stink at, that’s the Cowboys in a nutshell. You’ll hear lots of talk about how it was a good call based on what the Chiefs had been doing on defense on 3rd downs, or the alignment they were in, or the position of the moon. Don’t buy it. They simply tried to get cute and it cost them.
Over at Arrowhead Pride, the mood was decidedly different as Joel Thorman discussed the importance of defense.
From the third quarter to the fourth quarter, the Chiefs created turnovers on two straight Dallas drives. The Chiefs defense comes up big when they need to.
The Chiefs have a short time to get ready for the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday while the Cowboys play the St. Louis Rams at home next Sunday.
