Saints vs. Buccaneers 2013: New Orleans ‘defense is for real’

New Orleans found a way to win late on the leg of Garrett Hartley.

The New Orleans Saints topped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium, moving their record to 2-0 with a pair of division wins.

Tampa Bay, on the other hand, has now dropped two consecutive games on game-winning field goals at the gun.

Drew Brees played an uneven game, throwing two interceptions -- including one that was returned 85 yards by Mason Foster for a touchdown, putting the Buccaneers up 14-13 at the time. Brees also threw for 322 yards and a touchdown, though, so it wasn't all bad.

Over at Canal Street Chronicles, Dave Cariello talked about the defense for New Orleans.

Fortunately, Rob Ryan and this Saints defense is for real. Other than giving up huge chunks of yards to Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin on the ground, the Saints defense was yet again came up with big plays. Cam Jordan caused a fumble, recovered by Junior Galette. Malcolm Jenkins had a sweet interception and nice return.

Tampa Bay is trying to get itself together after falling in its home opener. The Buccaneers got a brutal performance out of Josh Freeman who completed just nine of 22 passes for 125 yards with a touchdown and interception.

Strong words are being said on Bucs Nation about what Freeman needs to do going forward:

If Freeman is the starter this week, I think he needs to just let it all hang out. They take too long getting the play in from the sideline? Call your own dang play and go at it. Run around, play sandlot football. Have some fun. It may tick off your head coach but that guy isn’t in your corner anyway.
