Linval Joseph contract: Giants DT a priority to re-sign

The Giants have a handful of free agents coming up, but an ESPN report says that they could prioritize defensive tackle Linval Joseph.

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph may be first in line to get an extension from the team, according to ESPN New York. Joseph's rookie contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Giants have a number of pending free agents after the 2013 season, including wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and defensive end Justin Tuck, but the team may be looking to prioritize bringing back Joseph if Nicks and Tuck continue to play poorly.

ESPN also says that the Giants could jettison several veterans if their nightmare season continues. David Baas, David Diehl, Chris Snee and Corey Webster could be on the outs if the team doesn't improve on an 0-3 start.

A second-round pick in 2010, Joseph has been one of the few bright spots on the defensive line this year. Through three games, he has 16 tackles, 0.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Joseph's best skill is in run defense and he was a key part of the Giants' Super Bowl run in 2011.
