Lions to name Teryl Austin defensive coordinator, Ron Prince OC or assistant, per report

The Detroit Lions have their man in Jim Caldwell, and now it looks like they have their assistants in line as well.

The Detroit Lions are expected to name Teryl Austin as their defensive coordinator and Ron Prince as offensive coordinator, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Austin and Price will join Jim Caldwell, who was hired by the Lions early on Tuesday.

Austin is currently the defensive backs coach of the Baltimore Ravens. Austin has been a solid position coach for the Ravens, helping Corey Graham emerge into an NFL cornerback. Jimmy Smith has played very well for Austin over the past few seasons as well.

Prince, who may also become the assistant head coach, according to Wilson, is the current offensive coordinator at Rutgers. In the NFL, Prince previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars, working as an assistant coach with the offensive line.

Both guys are relatively unknown to most fans, but both are well-respected around the league. Caldwell is getting his second shot at being a head coach in the NFL after a disastrous 2011 campaign with the Colts that ended in him losing his job. Prince was on Indianapolis’ staff while Caldwell was in charge.

Prince and Caldwell will have the job of making the most out of the trio of quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Calvin Johnson and running back Reggie Bush. Austin will take over a defense with plenty of weapons, and the handful that is Ndamukong Suh.
