Dolphins hire Bill Lazor as offensive coordinator

Miami has settled on a replacement for Mike Sherman, tabbing an ex-QB coach.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have hired ex-Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor to be their new offensive coordinator, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Lazor was thought to have been hired on Tuesday by the Detroit Lions to join newly minted head coach Jim Caldwell's staff. However, the report turned out to be erroneous, and Lazor will now be working with Ryan Tannehill instead of Matthew Stafford.

This is the first time Lazor will be a coordinator. Previously, Lazor was the Eagles quarterback coach in 2013 after working with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins in the same position.

Miami's offense has some ability to go with Tannehill, featuring wide receivers Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace. His biggest challenge will be protecting Tannehill, who was sacked 58 times, the most allowed by any team. With Jonathan Martin likely not returning after the bullying scandal, Miami will be looking for help at the left tackle spot via the draft and free agency.
