Chargers GM Tom Telesco wants to add speed to offense in 2014

San Diego stunned the masses by making the playoffs this season, but its front office is thirsting for more.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers went 9-7 this season, made the playoffs and knocked off the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card round before losing to the Denver Broncos.

Much of their success had to do with a reborn Philip Rivers, new head coach Mike McCoy, and the addition of dynamic rookie receiver Keenan Allen. Yet, general manager Tom Telesco wants to improve the unit which ranked fourth in passing and 13th in rushing.

Telesco believes the offense can use a dose of speed, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Matt Calkins. It makes sense, considering the only truly fast player on the offense is Allen. Wide receiver Malcom Floyd has speed, but he spent all but two games on injured reserve after a scary neck injury.

The running backs are a solid bunch, but neither Ryan Mathews nor Danny Woodhead would be considered a game-breaking type, a la ex-Chargers back Darren Sproles. Tight end Antonio Gates is one of the best in the business, but he certainly has lost a step or two in regards to acceleration.

With the 25th pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, San Diego might want to shore up some of its defensive holes. However, if Telesco does go for speed he will have his options. The draft is loaded with top wide receiver prospects including names like Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson, men who have speed to burn.

Jeremy Maclin is another intriguing option who will be available. The free agent receiver missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL but has been sturdy for most of his career. The former Missouri star could come relatively cheap and provide a great target on the outside for Rivers.
