John Elway: Playoffs aren’t ‘nearly as much fun’ as an exec

The current Broncos VP of football operations said he finds himself itching to be on the field come playoff time.

It's been 15 years since John Elway played a down as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos, but he's still adjusting to not being on the field.

Now serving as the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, Elway told members of the media Thursday his new position is significantly less fun come playoff time, according to Mike Klis of The Denver Post.

It’s very different. It takes some getting used to. I enjoy watching the regular-season games, but I was absolutely miserable last week watching this game. It took me four hours to get the pit out of my stomach when it was over. It’s not nearly as much fun upstairs as it is down on the field, especially these championship games and the playoffs.

The team that Elway has helped build rolled past the San Diego Chargers last week in the Divisional round and will face the New England Patriots on Sunday. Since Elway was hired as an exec three years ago, the Broncos have captured three AFC West titles and advanced to the second round of the playoffs each of those seasons.

Elway led the Broncos to two Super Bowl victories as a Hall of Fame quarterback in the 1990s, a feat he has yet to accomplish as an exec.
