Browns coaching search: Todd Bowles will interview Friday

Bowles is also set to interview with the Vikings next week, while Cleveland is still scheduled to interview Josh McDaniels on Saturday.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

The Cleveland Browns will interview Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for their head coaching position on Friday, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The Browns fired former head coach Rod Chudzinski after just one season and a 4-12 record. Cleveland has also been strongly connected to New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is set to interview on Saturday.

Bowles spent just one season as the defensive coordinator in Arizona under first-year head coach Bruce Arians, and the Cardinals finished sixth in total defense and seventh in points allowed. He had previous served as interim defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012 under Andy Reid after Juan Castillo had been fired mid-season. Bowles was also the interim head coach with the Miami Dolphins in 2011 for three games after Tony Sparano was fired, and had a 2-1 record.

Bowles was the secondary coach with the Browns from 2001 to '04, before taking the same position with the Dallas Cowboys from 2005 to '07, and then with Miami from 2008 to 2011.

Cleveland may have competition for his services. The Minnesota Vikings are set to interview Bowles for their own vacancy next week, and it's been noted that the Detroit Lions may also throw their hat in the ring. However, Cardinals GM Steve Keim has said that Bowles is happy in Arizona and for Bowles to leave, it would have to be a "special opportunity."

Whether or not the Browns qualify as special, that remains to be seen.
