Lions coaching search: Jim Caldwell interviewing on Friday

The Detroit Lions will interview Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell for their open head coaching position, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The interview is set to take place on Friday. The Lions fired former head coach Jim Schwartz on Monday after five seasons and just one playoff appearance.

Caldwell has spent the last two seasons with the Ravens, first as quarterbacks coach in 2012 before being promoted to offensive coordinator midseason following the firing of Cam Cameron, and then retaining that position in 2013. Baltimore went on to win the Super Bowl, scoring an average of 31 points per game in the playoffs. Caldwell previously was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2011, making a Super Bowl appearance during his first season.

The Colts fired Caldwell after a 2-14 finish in 2011, when quarterback Peyton Manning missed the whole season with a neck injury. He had previously coached for seven seasons under head coach Tony Dungy in Indianapolis and one season in Tampa Bay, always as a quarterbacks coach, though he was also the assistant head coach under Dungy in Indy. He was head coach at Wake Forest from 1993 to 2000.

The Lions lost six of their last seven games of the year to finish 7-9 and miss the playoffs entirely. Detroit had reportedly also been pursuing Lovie Smith, but he has since been hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Washington Redskins are also expected to interview Caldwell for their head coaching vacancy.
