Romeo Crennel signs 3-year deal with Houston Texans as defensive coordinator

Houston is starting to form its staff around Bill O’Brien with the hiring of Crennel.

Dilip Vishwanat

The Houston Texans have hired Romeo Crennel to be their defensive coordinator, signing him to a three-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Crennel has long been known as one of the best defensive coordinators in football, winning three Super Bowl championships with the New England Patriots in that role. He was also part of two Super Bowls with the New York Giants in 1986 and 1990 as a special teams and defensive line coach respectively.

With Crennel in the mix, it assures Houston will be staying with the 3-4 style it played under Gary Kuniak and Wade Phillips. Crennel likes to employ a variety of looks, but plays a ton of cover two defense that allows for short passes but chokes off the deep ball. In other words, the Texans should get ready for a ton of bend-don’t-break.

Crennel was last in the NFL in 2012 as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. As a head coach, Crennel proved to be a disaster, going 2-14 in his only season with the Chiefs despite having six pro bowlers on the roster. Crennel was also a head coach with the Cleveland Browns, where he amassed a 24-40 mark.
