Kirby Wilson to have 2nd interview for Ravens offensive coordinator job

The Baltimore Ravens are drawing closer to finding a replacement for offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, who left the organization to take a head coaching position with the Detroit Lions.

Kirby Wilson will interview for a second time with the organization on Friday, according to Jeff Zrebiec and Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. Wilson has been the longstanding running backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a job he has held since 2007. He's described as a "very serious candidate" by sources familiar with the situation, and has appeal for a team looking to improve on its 30th-ranked run offense in 2013 -- despite having All-Pro running back Ray Rice.

Wilson is largely credited for his development of Rashard Mendenhall following his selection in the 2008 draft, though most recently, with a host of injuries to the offensive line and starting rookie Le'Veon Bell in 2013, the Steelers only ranked 27th in rushing. Wilson has been a position coach in the NFL since 1997 when he joined the New England Patriots, coaching running backs on five different teams and working with wide receivers in the college ranks at USC in 2001.

Despite appearing to be the front-runner, there's no guarantee the Ravens will hire a coach from their AFC North rivals. Former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will also meet with the team for a second time, and has considerable support from several people in the front office. There is also a chance the Ravens could look to promote from within, which would mean a new role for wide receivers coach Jim Hostler.
