New GM Jason Licht says Buccaneers open to trading No. 7 overall NFL Draft pick

The Bucs’ new general manager apparently isn’t afraid to shake things up. Jason Licht may be ready to trade the No. 7 overall pick heading into a critical NFL Draft for Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' new general manager Jason Licht is open to trading the team's No. 7 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, he said Thursday. The Bucs could seemingly go several different directions with the pick, with serious question marks on both sides of the ball.

The Bucs' clear needs at several different positions could make the possibility of gaining extra draft picks with a trade enticing. Licht and new head coach Lovie Smith will need to put their heads together and determine whether Mike Glennon is the franchise's future at quarterback. If they decide he is, they could try to deal their first-round pick, knowing that the No. 7 slot is a prime spot to snag one among this year's prized crop of passers.

With an extra pick or two, Tampa Bay could address issues in the receiving corps, along the offensive line or at the pass rushing positions. Currently, Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson is projected to go to the Buccaneers at No. 7 in SB Nation’s latest mock draft.

Licht replaced fired GM Mark Dominik. Despite taking Dominik’s place, however, Licht will be acting in a somewhat more stripped down role than what his predecessor enjoyed. Licht told reporters that he will strictly be a personnel/talent evaluator for the Bucs, and that someone else will handle contract negotiations with players and agents. Smith will have final say over the roster.
