Dolphins hire Dennis Hickey as new general manager

Hickey was a surprise candidate who wowed in the interview process.

The Miami Dolphins' long search for a new general manager is finally over, as the team has hired Dennis Hickey for the position on Sunday, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald first reported. The Dolphins officially announced the hire later in the morning.

Hickey was a surprise late-comer to the process after working nearly two decades with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, most recently as the director of player personnel. Hickey was not considered a candidate for the Bucs' own vacant general manager position, so his candidacy with the Dolphins was not expected. But he reportedly wowed Miami owner Stephen Ross in the interview process and has ended up with the general manager position.

Hickey replaces Jeff Ireland, who was the team’s general manager from 2008-13. In his first year, the team went 11-5 and won the AFC East, but has not made the playoffs (or finished with a winning record) since. Miami attempted to make a splash in the free agent market last offseason, which resulted in one added win where they finished 8-8 in 2013 after a 7-9 mark in 2012.
