Lions GM admits Matthew Stafford must improve his game

In 2013, the quarterback had his lowest completion percentage and highest number of interceptions since his rookie year.

The Detroit Lions have had one of the most talented rosters in football over the past few seasons, but are coming off of back-to-back losing seasons and widespread disappointment.

At least some of that blame falls on former No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford, who has seen a decline in performance in each of his past three seasons. General manager Martin Mayhew told Kyle Meinke of MLive that Stafford has to improve in order for the team to succeed.

“I think there certainly has to be some work done,” general manager Martin Mayhew said last week. “I couldn’t really quantify that.”

Stafford’s completion percentage has dropped in each of the past two years, with his 2013 mark of 58.5% his lowest since his rookie year. The veteran out of Georgia also threw 19 interceptions -- again most since his rookie year -- and threw five picks in the final three games of the year.

The Lions made two offseason moves that would appear to help Stafford's development, bringing in head coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, who have worked with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, respectively.
