Washington will interview Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell in their quest to find a replacement for Mike Shanahan, Ian Rapoport is reporting.
Redskins will interview Giants DC Perry Fewell on Monday, per report
Fewell would be the team’s first official African-American head coach if hired.
Fewell is familiar with the NFC East and has been with the Giants since 2010 as New York's defensive coordinator. He helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2012, and had success prior to his tenure with the Giants as the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.
In 2008, Fewell’s Bills defense allowed just 14 passing touchdowns all season. When their head coach Dick Jauron was fired midseason in 2009, Fewell took over and led the team to a 3-4 finish as their interim head coach before a wholesale staff changeover in the offseason.
Before his time with the Bills, Fewell was a defensive backs coach in the NFL. Before that, he was the assistant head coach at Vanderbilt in 1997.
Fewell would be Washington’s first official African-American head coach. Terry Robiskie was the interim head coach for three games in 2000.
