Ken Whisenhunt considered top candidate for Lions head coach, per report

Wisenhunt is also considered a candidate for the open jobs in Washington, Minnesota and Tennessee.

Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is considered the top candidate for the vacant head coaching position with the Detroit Lions, Ian Rapoport is reporting.

Whisenhunt is also considered to be a candidate with Washington, Minnesota and Tennessee, so the Lions could have some competition when trying to nab their candidate.

Detroit fired Jim Schwartz after five seasons and just one playoff appearance, posting a 29-51 record in his career with the team.

After some time as a tight ends coach in the NFL, Whisenhunt was promoted to offensive coordinator of the Steelers in 2004. After helping lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XL, he was hired as the head coach of the Cardinals in 2007.

In 2008, Whisenhunt led the Cardinals to their first playoff appearance in a decade, winning the NFC West at 9-7 and improbably making a run to the Super Bowl (where they lost to the Steelers). Arizona won the division again the next season at 10-6, but lost to the Saints in the second round of the playoffs. After missing the playoffs the next three seasons with two 5-11 marks, he was fired after the 2012 season.
