Antonio Cromartie expects release from Jets

He could end up back with the team after testing the free agent market.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Antonio Cromartie has told his Jets teammates that expects to be released by the team, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.

The cornerback is in the final year of a deal that would pay $15 million next year, including a $5 million roster bonus in March, and New York would save a good chunk of money on the injury-riddle Cromartie by doing so. Because it's the final year of his contract, they can not restructure it, so the likely move is the same they did last year with linebacker Calvin Pace -- let him shop the free agent market before trying to match his highest offer, if they feel it is worthwhile.

Cromartie started his NFL career with the Chargers in 2006, recording a league-high ten interceptions in his second season. He came over to the Jets in 2010, and has recorded 13 interceptions in his four seasons with the team. This year, he had 35 tackles, with three interceptions and ten pass deflections.
