Mike Munchak refused to fire staff for Titans extension, per report

Munchak was offered a multi-year extension on the condition he make over his staff of assistants.

The Tennessee Titans offered Mike Munchak a conditional contract extension prior to firing him, but the coach did not like the terms and turned down the offer, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.

Munchak, who was fired on Saturday after three seasons with Tennessee, was reportedly offered up to a two-year extension by team president Tommy Smith if he agreed to terminate a specified number of his staff.

The organization wanted a dramatic shakeup after a 7-9 season. Wyatt reports that Munchak was asked to fire at least a half dozen of his assistants, including offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, offensive line coach Bruce Matthews and linebackers coach Chet Parlavecchio. Matthews and Parlavecchio were close personal friends of Munchak’s.

Munchak went 22-26 with the Titans, failing to make the playoffs in all three seasons.

According to ESPN, Munchak is scheduled to interview for the head coaching position at Penn State, a void left by Bill O'Brien's departure to the Houston Texans.
