Carl Nicks could be Buccaneers salary cut

Once a premier offensive lineman, Nicks might be on his way out due to a big cap hit next season.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

When healthy, Carl Nicks is one of the best guards in all of football. However, he may be one of the annual cap casualties of the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers bringing in a new front office, according to the National Football Post.

Nicks has been one of the most disappointing free agent signings in franchise history, mostly because he can't get on the field. The former New Orleans Saints star inked a five-year, $47.5 million deal with Tampa Bay in 2012 with the expectation of forming a great left side of the line along with Donald Penn.

Instead, Nicks has only played in nine games over the past two seasons. Nicks played in seven contests in 2012 before injuring his foot, requiring surgery and ending his campaign. Then this season, Nicks was struck down by the MRSA infection in his repaired foot.

Nicks was only able to play twice in 2013 before the infection came back, ending his season and putting his career in serious jeopardy. He is due $7 million next season.
