Josh McDaniels withdraws from Browns coaching search

The Patriots offensive coordinator has taken his name out of the Cleveland coaching search.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will no longer be a candidate for the Browns head coaching job, according to multiple reports.

McDaniels had a 7.5-hour meeting with Cleveland's front office on Saturday. Owner Jimmy Haslam loved him, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. Unfortunately for Haslam, McDaniels has decided to stay with the Patriots and withdraw his name from consideration for the job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. McDaniels did not feel it was the right time to become a head coach again, per Schefter. This is seen as a huge loss for the Browns, who were all for hiring the former Broncos head coach, according to Football Scoop.

McDaniels returned to the Patriots following a short stint as Rams offensive coordinator and two-year tenure as Broncos head coach. The once-billed offensive guru was just 11-18 as a head coach the first time around. He was let go midway through the 2010 season. His stint with the Rams ended after just one year.

The Patriots ranked seventh in offense this season, despite several injuries to major playmakers. New England finished with a 12-4 record and a first-round bye in the postseason. The Patriots are the second seed in the AFC playoffs.
