Jay Gruden’s Redskins staff will likely include Sean McVay as OC, per report

Washington is changing things up, looking to rebound from a miserable 2013 campaign with fresh blood on the offensive side of the ball.

UPDATE: Jay Gruden said in his introductory press conference Thursday that McVay has not been promoted to offensive coordinator. Via CoachingSearch.com:

Gruden humorously said, “Nice. (smiles) Good for Sean.” (pause) “I have not (hired Sean). I do like Sean. He’s a heckuva guy, a heckuva coach, but we’ll go through the process. There’s a lot of great coaches out there and he’s a great person and great coach.”

The Washington Redskins are expected to promote tight ends coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator under new head coach Jay Gruden, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Gruden was the offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011-13 before taking the Redskins' top job. He will not be handling coordinator duties in Washington, giving McVay his old responsibilities. McVay is only 27 years old, but is now in charge of an offense led by Robert Griffin III.

McVay was a wide receiver at Miami University in Ohio before going to the NFL as an offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. After a season with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League, McVay landed a position with the Redskins in 2010 and has been there since.

Gruden and McVay both coached for the Tuskers at the same time. Gruden was the head coach and general manager before taking the Bengals’ offensive coordinator job.

McVay has football bloodlines. His grandfather, John, was a head coach of the New York Giants and a front office executive for the San Francisco 49ers.

On the defensive side of the ball, Raheem Morris is a candidate to become the defensive coordinator, replacing Jim Haslett, per Schefter. Last year, Haslett got little out of the Redskins' defense. The unit allowed 29.9 points per game, which was only better than the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL.

Morris was the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-11 before getting fired in favor of Greg Schiano. Morris went 17-31 during his time in Tampa. He has been the defensive backs coach for Washington the last two seasons.

Gruden may still leave Haslett as the defensive coordinator, or promote him to assistant head coach, according to the Washington Post. Should the latter of those two scenarios occur, Morris would then be promoted to the coordinator position.
