Drew Brees reaches 40,000 passing yards as Saints QB

Only six other quarterbacks have ever thrown 40,000 yards with one franchise.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees needed 64 yards coming into Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become just the sixth quarterback in NFL history with 40,000 passing yards with one franchise. It didn't take him long to reach the milestone on Sunday -- fitting for a man who also became the fastest to the 40,000-yard mark with a single team.

Brees surpassed the milestone on a 36-yard bomb deep to Marques Colston on the Saints’ second offensive possession of the game.

Now in his ninth season in New Orleans, Brees joined the team as a free agent in 2006. Turned off by a shoulder injury that ended his previous season, the San Diego Chargers let him walk, and the Miami Dolphins, who came close to signing him, eventually settled on Daunte Culpepper. That landed Brees with the Saints, where he teamed with Sean Payton to immediately transform the long-moribund franchise.

The Saints have routinely been one of the league’s top offenses under Brees. He’s led them to five playoff appearances in eight seasons and took them to a Super Bowl victory after the 2009 season.
