Chris Conte to miss remainder of Lions’ game with eye injury

The Bears secondary took a blow early Thursday when safety Chris Conte had to be taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion. He was ultimately determined to have an eye injury and would not return.

Chicago Bears safety Chris Conte left in the first quarter of the Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions after hitting his head hard on the Ford Field turf. The Bears announced that Conte was being evaluated for a concussion after taking him to the locker room.

As Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press pointed out, Conte has already suffered two concussions this season. The Bears ultimately announced that Conte had sustained an eye injury and would not be able to return to Thursday’s game. He was determined to not have a concussion.

Conte’s absence would be a blow to a secondary (and defense as a whole) that has struggled mightily this season, giving up more than 260 yards passing per game. Conte has 39 tackles on the season to go with three interceptions.

The Bears’ defense is was off to a good start against the Lions, holding Detroit to three points on its first two possessions and forcing a fumble caused by pressure on Matthew Stafford. However, the Lions turned things around in the second quarter and managed to take the lead.
