Dolphins owner says head coach Joe Philbin is coming back

Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross told reporters that head coach Joe Philbin would be returning for 2015.

After beating the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross told reporters that third-year head coach Joe Philbin would return for a fourth season in 2015.

“Here’s a Christmas present. You don’t have to ask me anymore. He has one year left on contract and is coming back,” Ross told reporters in the locker room after the game. That squelched reports from a week ago that said Philbin’s “fate was sealed” and he would be fired after the season was over.

Miami's win moved the Dolphins to 8-7, giving them a shot at their first winning season since 2008. However, the Dolphins were eliminated from the playoffs despite the win because of the Pittsburgh Steelers' win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2008 season was also the last time Miami made a trip to the playoffs.

Philbin’s status was questionable as the Dolphins were up and down throughout the season despite preseason hopes that they could contend with the New England Patriots for the AFC East. They lost close games to the Packers, Lions and Broncos, and are currently in third place in their division.

The Dolphins finished 7-9 and 8-8 in Philbin’s first two seasons in Miami.
