Across the NFL, teams are getting a few more practices in before the first week of the preseason starts on Thursday night.
Camp roundup: 2 QB system coming to Cleveland?

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY SportsHere is the 29-year-old Redman in his own words:
“I think in the NFL that you do yourself a disservice if you don’t have two quarterbacks ready,” Pettine said on Friday. “And people have asked me about potentially a two-quarterback system and having a package for [Manziel]. That is on the table.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY SportsBeckham, the team’s first-round draft pick, has been hampered with a hamstring injury dating back to OTAs. He hasn’t been a full participant in any of the team’s 29 training camp practices and will be missing his fourth preseason game on Friday.
Pead tore his ACL last Saturday, and now the St. Louis Rams have placed him on waivers, according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports. There’s still a chance that the reserve running back stays in St. Louis: he’ll revert to the Rams roster if he clears waivers without being claimed by another team. In that case he would either be placed on injured reserve or reach an injury settlement that makes him a free agent.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY SportsPettine’s plan coming into the week was to have a decision made by Tuesday. It’s hard to imagine that he gleaned enough from Monday’s garbage fire to stay on schedule, and he suggested after the game he’s open to pushing the competition through the third preseason game.
“All options are still on the table,” Pettine told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland.com. “(Deciding Tuesday) is still something we’d like to do. We’ll see.”

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsThe latter report (that Boone turned down a large offer) has more writers backing it, starting with Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports. On top of that, David Fucillo of Niners Nation is skeptical of the original report -- not necessarily for its overall authenticity, but for its lack of information. In today’s NFL, “top 12” can mean so many different things from a contract standpoint. For now, it’s unclear where Boone and the 49ers stand.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY SportsHoyer completed 6 of 14 passes for 92 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Manziel completed 7 of 11 passes for 63 yards, also without touchdowns or interceptions, but also added 27 yards rushing off six carries. It’s a close battle at this point, but the Browns have said they would like to have a starter by the third preseason game.
A full offseason of working hard after getting in some reps last season, Tolzien has narrowed the gap considerably, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsMathieu, who has been out of commission since tearing his ACL and LCL last December, said he hopes he’ll be ready for the regular season opener but is still unsure. Early estimates had him missing the first two or three games.
“I’m itching to hit somebody,” Mathieu said. “I’m itching to get my hands on the ball. I’m tired of playing catch with the trainers.”

Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY SportsIt’s still unclear how realistic Manziel’s shot of starting the regular season is, but there does seem to be a strong chance he’ll get the nod next Monday against Washington. That game could very well be the deciding factor, as Pettine has said he’d like to have a decision made before the third exhibition.
Still, this competition is still very much up in the air. Ted Glover at Daily Norseman saw plenty of promise in Bridgewater’s statistically unremarkable debut.

Stew Milne-USA TODAY SportsWith the first week of the preseason in the books, teams are back at practice getting ready for Week 2. Monday’s session was mostly positive relative to injuries, as there were no big injuries to speak of and many big-name players rejoined their respective teams after missing time.
Gronkowski has missed 14 regular season games due to various injuries over the past two seasons. Any progress is welcome news to Patriots fans.

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY SportsAs for other notable Texans, the team will not be taking its chances with veterans Arian Foster and Andre Johnson. Both will sit out against the Cardinals with their own nicks and bruises. Neither has much to prove by participating in a preseason opener.
Head coach Bruce Arians isn’t so sure, apparently. Mathieu reportedly told the coach of his timetable, and got a gruff response. “I don’t think he takes me too seriously,” Mathieu said.

DeSean Jackson injured, Manziel impressing

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY SportsBrian Hoyer has been named the starter for the Cleveland Browns’ preseason opener, but it would appear as though Johnny Manziel is making up ground in a hurry. Manziel took first-team reps on Wednesday and put on a show.
Meanwhile, Hoyer wasn’t helping his own cause.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY SporIt’s unclear how long Bennett will be suspended for at this point. The Bears open their preseason with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. Bennett is expected to play a big role with the Bears this season, but missing one preseason game wouldn’t be detrimental to the team, and it might send a strong message to the tight end.
Cleveland Browns tight end Gary Barnidge is turning heads in camp, thanks to an amazing one-handed catch he made on Tuesday. Barnidge is competing with Jim Dray for a spot on the roster, but the latest depth chart has him ahead of him, behind Jordan Cameron, which bodes well. Here’s video of Barnidge’s catch:

Howard Smith-USA TODAY SportsHere’s video of the play below, via the Chicago Sun-Times:
Training camp scuffles are not unheard of and it would be news if a team made it through this process without the occasional fight. But Bennett took things a bit too far on Monday, hence his suspension. It’s possible his attitude following the incident played a part as well. Bennett told the media that he can “afford” a fine. Bennett is expected to take on a large role in the Chicago offense this season.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY SportsThis season will feature five episodes, and it all begins Tuesday night. Obviously, if you’re looking to watch, then you’ve got to have HBO. Unfortunately, like past seasons, there is no agreement to broadcast Hard Knocks on HBO Go, so tuning in at 10 p.m., setting your DVR or catching the repeat Wednesday night at 11 p.m. are your only options.

Jason MillerManziel had been working exclusively with the second team throughout training camp, so going with the ones was a step up. It was just a scheduled step up though, according to coach Mike Pettine, who downplayed the significance of the move.
“It’s just part of our plan,” Pettine told The Associated Press. “We said we were going to allow the quarterbacks to compete, at some point you’ve got to mix up the supporting cast a little bit. It’s all part of it.”

Geno starts, Wilson gets hurt

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY SportsThe Tennessee Titans visited the Atlanta Falcon’s for a joint practice on Monday. There’s no tackling and no full-on 11-on-11 drills or anything of the sort, but of course that doesn’t mean things can’t get heated. It didn’t take long for a fight to break out at the joint practice:
These practices are generally held so both teams can get a change of pace. It’s not for a greater challenge, but rather to shake things up. Contact is supposed to be light but, as you can see above, fighting does happen.

The Chicago Bears training camp might be getting a little rough, as they just had Marquiss Wilson get carted off the field with what appears to be an arm injury. Here you can see his arm dangling to the side as he’s carted away to get it checked out:
Then you have the annual tempers flaring during a drill and players going a little too hard at their own teammates.

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY SportsUPDATE 1:57 p.m. ET: NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones is reporting that the Giants will “most likely” place Wilson on injured reserve.
Wilson’s future has been cloudy ever since a herniated disc in his neck ended his 2013 season in Week 5 and required surgery. In addition to the injury, it was revealed that Wilson is affected by the medial condition spinal stenosis, which narrows the spinal cord.

Marshawn Lynch remains Seahawks’ featured back

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY SportsThe news means Lynch will likely continue to be one of the most high-volume backs in the NFL. Each of the past three seasons, Lynch has at least 300 touches for Seattle, and as one of the key engines behind the team’s balanced offense, that could be the case again in 2014.
During the first week of training camp, the New England Patriots defense has already established a physical tone. That can rub some the wrong way, such as new cornerback Brandon Browner bringing the heat, but quarterback Tom Brady understands that the team’s offense has to get used to that to prepare for the regular season.

There was also plenty of injury news from earlier camp injuries, as well. David Wilson’s return form spinal fusion surgery is apparently not going very well, and it’s unlikely that he will be back with the Gants. According to NJ.com, Wilson “needs a miracle” to be able to come back.
