Olivier Vernon sits out, Cortland Finnegan looking sharp and more from training camp
Finnegan made life miserable for Ryan Tannehill on Tuesday and more from training camp around the NFL.

The Miami Dolphins were missing three guys at practice on Tuesday as defensive end Olivier Vernon, running back Daniel Thomas and tight end Michael Egnew are all dealing with injuries. All three players are expected to miss multiple practice sessions, as well:
#Dolphins announce DE Olivier Vernon (back), TE Michael Egnew (concussion) and RB Daniel Thomas (hamstring) will miss multiple practices.
— James Walker (@JamesWalkerNFL) August 5, 2014 Vernon is the big name there. He was one of Miami's best players on defense, and led the team in sacks with 11.5 in 2013. He was the only player on the team to make it into the double-digit sack numbers, with Cameron Wake coming in second with 8.5 to his name. At this point, all three of those players are likely to miss Friday's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
The New York Giants are still without their first-round pick. Rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was not at practice on Tuesday due to a hamstring injury, and has not yet been cleared for practice, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN. Beckham is expected to take on a prominent role with the Giants this season, but he's missed most of training camp, he missed the preseason opener and he's still not practicing with just over a week of camp remaining.
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was suited up for practice on Tuesday. Maclin is dealing with an injury and has been unable to complete the past two practice sessions. On Tuesday, he didn't take part in the scrimmage, but he did do individual drills and didn't appear to suffer any setbacks. It sounds like the Eagles are just being cautious with him at this point:
Shurmur suggests Maclin's inability to finish two of last three practices is unrelated to knee, just soreness that comes with camp.
— Tim McManus (@Tim_McManus) August 5, 2014 It's hard to imagine Maclin getting much playing time, if any, in the team's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.
Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Gabe Carimi was not at practice on Tuesday, but it's looking like the Falcons avoided disaster when it comes to his injury. He left practice on Monday with an ankle issue and given Atlanta's injury woes over the past year, many feared the worst. It sounds like Carimi only suffered an ankle sprain, however, which means he shouldn't miss too much time, as reported by Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.
Position battles
Miami Dolphins cornerback Cortland Finnegan may have played extremely poorly with the St. Louis Rams, but he's turning heads around the Dolphins' training camp. Finnegan is competing with Jamar Taylor for one of the starting cornerback spots opposite Brent Grimes, and he's "running away with the starting job," according to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post.
Finnegan picked off two Ryan Tannehill passes on Tuesday, and a third from Matt Moore. As Abramson notes, the Dolphins could be very dangerous this year if Finnegan approaches his pre-Rams form. Taylor has been playing well at camp, but at this point, it looks like Finnegan's job to lose.
While most want to hear about the ongoing quarterback battle between Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel, there's other battles to pay attention to when it comes to the Cleveland Browns. One such competition isn't nailed down to two specific players, but the Browns have a big need for young receivers to step up.
One prospect at the position is Willie Snead, an undrafted rookie who has "made the best impression by far" of the young receivers, according to Pat McManamon of ESPN. Someone like Snead could impress enough to force the Browns into cutting a veteran, particularly Anthony Armstrong.
Most figured that Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan wouldn't get a ton of work with starters because of his looming suspension. But due to the fact that Vernon is out with an injury, Jordan was working with the first team, as reported by James Walker of ESPN. Jordan has his work cut out for him when it comes to building up enough goodwill to return to a prominent role when his suspension is up, but potentially starting this upcoming preseason game would be a good start.
Bennett suspended after camp fight
Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett won't be at practice for a little while. After a fight with rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller during Monday's camp session, Bennett has been suspended and fined by the team. Bennett took offense when Fuller was trying to strip the ball from him after a catch. Fuller tossed Bennett to the ground, and was immediately taken down by Bennett, who took some time to calm down.
It’s unclear how long Bennett will be suspended for at this point. The Bears open their preseason with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday. Bennett is expected to play a big role with the Bears this season, but missing one preseason game wouldn’t be detrimental to the team, and it might send a strong message to the tight end.
No big deal, just a sweet catch
Cleveland Browns tight end Gary Barnidge is turning heads in camp, thanks to an amazing one-handed catch he made on Tuesday. Barnidge is competing with Jim Dray for a spot on the roster, but the latest depth chart has him ahead of him, behind Jordan Cameron, which bodes well. Here’s video of Barnidge’s catch:
Wilfork has moves
There's no video of this, but it's too good to leave out: New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork picked off a pass in training camp on Tuesday. Even better: The Patriots are holding a joint practice with Washington, so the pass Wilfork picked off was a screen pass from Robert Griffin III to Santana Moss. Wilfork intercepted the pass and did a "quarter victory lap," according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
Motivational iPads
The New York Jets have passwords on the iPads that are given out to players as digital playbooks. This is not uncommon. What's uncommon is that the Jets aren't worried about people knowing the password (these players aren't exactly letting their friends use the things to post on Instagram), which happens to be 1-9-6-9, according to the New York Post. That password is meant to be motivation for players -- it represents the last time the Jets won the Super Bowl.
