Doug Martin is out for the Buccaneers vs. Rams

Doug Martin will sit against the Rams, giving the reins to Bobby Rainey to find running room against a strong defensive line.

Doug Martin will miss Sunday's contest between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and St. Louis Rams with a knee injury, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. Bobby Rainey will start at running back for the Bucs against a stout defensive front.

Martin’s deactivation isn’t much of a surprise. Reports earlier in the day indicated that he would likely sit. He was still able to participate in practice during the week, however, albeit in limited fashion. The Tampa Bay Times reported on Friday that the running back would play before Sunday’s news was revealed.

After a scintillating rookie season, Martin has been a phantom due to injuries. He appeared in just six games last season, and was held to nine yards rushing on nine carries last week against the Carolina Panthers.

Rainey was modestly better with four carries for 12 yards. He may struggle being heavily featured against a Rams front that held Adrian Peterson to 75 yards on 21 carries last week.
