Robert Griffin III injury: Washington QB out with dislocated ankle, timetable uncertain
Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III will miss multiple weeks with an ankle injury, but the team wouldn’t put a specific timetable on his return.
The news first surfaced earlier today in a report by The Washington Post’s Mike Jones. Now, the team has confirmed through MRIs that Griffin indeed has avoided a more serious injury.
Griffin's ankle injury appeared far worse on first view. In the first half of Washington's Week 2 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the former Heisman trophy winner scrambled to the sideline and fell awkwardly when his left ankle gave out. The non-contact nature of the injury suggested a fracture, a condition that usually signals the end of a player's season. Fortunately for Griffin and his team, the third-year signal caller will return at some point this year. Pro Football Talk previous reported that he would miss 4-5 weeks. If that timetable proves accurate, Griffin could return for Washington's Week 7 game against the Tennessee Titans or Week 8 against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys. In the interim, Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback.
Washington head coach Jay Gruden clarified that Griffin is not a candidate for injured reserve, and shared some of the team’s other plans as it relates to the rest of the season:
Gruden said the team "may" bring another QB in while Griffin III is recovering; Kirk Cousins is starter with Colt McCoy backing up.

— Washington Redskins (@Redskins) September 15, 2014 Gruden said this was a "fluke deal" and "I don't think it speaks to his durability."
— Mike Jones (@MikeJonesWaPo) September 15, 2014 Gruden says everyone around Cousins must step up to ease pressure on him.
— Mike Jones (@MikeJonesWaPo) September 15, 2014 Gruden on Griffin "it's going to take a little bit out of him. It's frustrating"
