Robert Mathis tears Achilles tendon, out for the season, per reports

The Indianapolis Colts will be without star linebacker Robert Mathis for the rest of the 2014 season, according to a report.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Indianapolis Colts outside linebacker Robert Mathis has suffered a torn Achilles tendon that will cost him all of the 2014 season, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

The Colts were already without Mathis for the first four games of the year due to a suspension for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy. Mathis claimed the positive test came from taking fertility drugs while he and his wife were trying to conceive. Now Indianapolis will be without their top pass rusher for the remaineder of the season as well.

The injury occurred away from the team during his workouts in Atlanta, sources told Florio. The four-time Pro Bowler was coming off a year where he posted 19.5 sacks, the highest such mark in the NFL and a single-season best for the outside linebacker.

With Mathis gone for the rest of the 2014, the Colts will turn to Bjoern Werner and Erik Walden to bring pressure off the edge.
