GoDaddy pulled an advertisement that was set to air during Super Bowl 49 amid criticism that the commercial found humor in puppy mills.
Super Bowl commercials 2015: GoDaddy pulls puppy ad after criticism
A Super Bowl commercial featuring a puppy sold online has been pulled by GoDaddy.
The commercial, which was released online on Tuesday, was pulled by GoDaddy on the same day after animal rescue advocates objected to the advertisement. GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving said on Twitter that the commercial “clearly missed the mark” and vowed that it wouldn’t be aired.
In the commercial, a puppy is trying to find its way back home after a bump on the road caused the dog to fall out of the back of a truck. The owner set up a website on GoDaddy that allowed the puppy to be sold to a new owner, though.
Critics of the commercial said that the advertisement pokes fun at the selling of puppies online, which is a common practice of puppy mills. The commercial is still live on YouTube, but has been made private.
GoDaddy has developed a reputation for Super Bowl commercials that toe the line for what is and what isn’t politically correct. Many of the company’s advertisements have been banned and uncensored versions have later appeared online.
