    The Marshawn Lynch Encyclopedia

    Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Marshawn Lynch never gives interviews, but has several of the NFL’s most famous quotes. He says over and over again he wants to avoid media attention, but gets called an attention-seeker. His job description includes getting tackled, but he inflicts more pain than the tacklers.

Marshawn Lynch makes so little sense in this world that wherever he goes, he leaves a trail of fascinating things in his wake. Sometimes they’re weird words. Sometimes they’re brutalized defenders. We can’t hope to understand him, but we’ve tried to compile all the wonderful, strange, and good things about Marshawn Lynch in one post. This is the Marshawn Lynch Encyclopedia.

Josh Elliott will also sit down with halftime performer, Katy Perry.

We have to imagine Lynch will swap out the cleats before the game — we doubt Lynch would risk his ability to play in the Super Bowl over shoe choice.

Sleeper picks for Super Bowl MVP

    Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

One guy, age 25, only in his second NFL season, longs for his Mississippi roots and home. This player is equipped and capable of stepping from the shadows, handling his business, leaving his imprint on this Super Bowl and becoming a surprise MVP.

NFL coaches whose teams played against the Patriots this season marveled at Collins. They love his length, flexibility and motor. They love how he wins matchups and affects passing lanes, short and deep.

Jets, Bills to pursue Darrelle Revis

    Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The Bills will also attempt to lure Revis away from New England. Ryan, now the head coach in Buffalo, looks to reunite with his former disciple and add to a defense that finished fourth in points allowed in 2014.

Revis delivered one of his finest seasons in 2014, his first with the Patriots. Quarterbacks put up only a 70.5 passer rating on passes thrown in his direction, according to Pro Football Focus, more than 20 points better than the closest cornerback on the team. Revis also hauled in two interceptions and forced a fumble. He signed a one-year, $12 million deal with New England this offseason that includes an option for 2015. If the Patriots don’t pick up Revis’ $20 million option, then he’ll become a free agent.

SNL’s take on Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch

Key & Peele already had their take on the Seahawks teammates. Now Saturday Night Live is taking their turn in this week’s cold open. Jay Pharoah’s Richard Sherman is pretty great. He always starts the show by verbally calling out somebody who’s already lost, you know. Watch out, Bill DiBlasio.

And Taran Killam’s Pete Carroll? Almost as good as his Tom Brady.

What you need to know about Katy Perry and guests

Many of us are watching the Super Bowl for the football game. Many of us are watching the Super Bowl for the commercials. Many of us are watching the Super Bowl for THE HALFTIME SHOW, which this year features Katy Perry as the headliner.

Perry, the pop sensation whose shouty, flirty earworms have hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 nine times, will be joined by Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott. The halftime is a bit longer than the usual 15 minutes allotted to most NFL games, and typically performers get the chance to perform a medley featuring snippets of about 10 or so of their songs. Guests like Kravitz and Elliott typically get to join for one song of their own.

    Super Bowl 49 rosters

Winning the Super Bowl would give the Seahawks a rare repeat, something that hasn’t been done since Brady and Belichick did it just over a decade ago.

Those guys will have to go against the biggest names on Seattle, as the players you immediately think of are all in the secondary. Cornerback Richard Sherman and safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor all have legitimate claims to being the best players at their position in the NFL. Seattle has a ton of money invested in those guys. On offense, quarterback Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch come to mind.

How much do Super Bowl commercials really cost?

But how much does it really cost to get those ads on the air? Specifically, what does a company have to pay the network -- in this case, NBC -- to get its time to shine? Last year the figure of $4 million was thrown around a lot, and that was more or less accurate. In other words, $4 million bought one 30-second ad unit, and double that bought a 60-second ad unit.

Bigger companies who buy multiple units will get discounts and pay significantly less than the $4 million, though we’ll likely never have any true idea how those particular deals work out. But by and large, that number is pretty darn close to accurate. And it’s going to rise this year.

Great weather in Phoenix for the big game.

Super Bowl XLIX is here and kicks off later today at 6:30 p.m. ET at University of Phoenix Stadium. The stadium has a retractable roof. With such nice weather expected Sunday afternoon and evening for Phoenix, I recommend the NFL rolls down the windows (or open the roof) and enjoy the nice winter weather in the Desert Southwest.

High pressure just off the California coast will bring in a nice, dry flow over Arizona. The temperatures will be very pleasant in the upper 60s to near 70 by kickoff and remain nice and mild through the game. Winds will not be an issues as they should be fairly light and variable. Some winds could come out of the south and maybe get up to 5 mph.

Finding theme music for the 2015 Super Bowl heroes

Professional wrestling has entrance music. Baseball players have walk-up music. Basketball games are basically one long music video. But the potential heroes and villains of Super Bowl XLIX need some personalized theme music as well. Let’s give them some.

There’s no way Tom Brady doesn’t constantly picture himself as Daniel-san from The Karate Kid, right? He’s the closest thing we have to a real-like Karate Kid. This song is perfect.

Seahawks offer Lynch a new deal

Marshawn Lynch has been indispensable to the Seattle Seahawks. The team recognizes that and has reportedly offered him a contract extension that would keep Beast Mode there beyond the 2015 season, which is when his current deal expires, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Full details of the contract offer were not available. However, the deal is believed to be a lucrative one that includes more than $10 million for the upcoming season. That would double the $5 million that Lynch is due on his current contract 2015. Depending on how the deal is structured, it could also reduce his $8.5 million cap hit for 2015. That would allow the Seahawks more flexibility for an upcoming contract extension with quarterback Russell Wilson, a deal many expect to be the largest contract a quarterback has ever signed.

    Sherman or Revis?

    Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

PHOENIX -- When a reporter tried to rekindle the Richard Sherman vs. Darrelle Revis debate earlier this week by asking Sherman if he’s the best in the game, the Seahawks’ cornerback scoffed at the “preschool question” and admonished him to “improve his line of questioning” instead of trying to incite controversy. This may be the first time that superlatives and Sherman haven’t agreed, but his point was salient: In a media landscape where clicks are everything and hot takes are the new norm, why can’t we just sit back and appreciate both Revis and Sherman for how remarkably consistent they’ve played this season?

In many ways, comparing Revis to Sherman is like comparing apples to oranges anyway.

    Latest Super Bowl odds

    Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Super Bowl Sunday is finally here, so if you wanted to get in some last-minute bets, now is your chance. As usual, tons and tons of bets have been rolling in for Super Bowl 49, though there’s not a ton of room to take advantage of slanted odds given that they’ve been close since opening and have moved little.

On the morning of the Super Bowl, the odds were much the same as they have been over the past few days: New England is steady as the favorite, but only by a point or so at most books. They’re at -1 on some, -1.5 on others and the matchup sits at even money on others, according to OddsShark.

Super Bowl 2015 kickoff time for Super Bowl XLIV

The pomp and circumstance of the Super Bowl has arrived. The New England Patriots look to win their fourth title under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady while the Seattle Seahawks try for two in a row.

Super Bowl XLIX will be defined by the legacy ramifications for both of the teams involved. The Patriots won three titles in the early 2000s, but they fell short in their two subsequent trips. Both times, Belichick and Brady were outdone by the underdog New York Giants. Worse, New England has endured multiple cheating scandals since their last Super Bowl ring including the ongoing DeflateGate accusations. A win Sunday would silence many of the team’s critics and refocus the attention on the incredible, prolonged success of the current Patriots regime.

How to watch complete Super Bowl coverage

Super Bowl Sunday is officially here. The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are set to meet for Super Bowl 49 in just a matter of hours. The game is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. ET, shortly after a national anthem from Idina Menzel and “America The Beautiful” from John Legend.

Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are looking for their fourth Lombardi Trophy together, and as the top seed in the AFC they’ve got as good a shot as anyone at beating the defending champion Seahawks. New England took down the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round and the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship to make it this far.
