Marshawn Lynch has been indispensable to the Seattle Seahawks. The team recognizes that and has reportedly offered him a contract extension that would keep Beast Mode there beyond the 2015 season, which is when his current deal expires, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Marshawn Lynch offered contract extension from the Seahawks
Seattle wants to keep Beast Mode around for a long time.
Full details of the contract offer were not available. However, the deal is believed to be a lucrative one that includes more than $10 million for the upcoming season. That would double the $5 million that Lynch is due on his current contract 2015. Depending on how the deal is structured, it could also reduce his $8.5 million cap hit for 2015. That would allow the Seahawks more flexibility for an upcoming contract extension with quarterback Russell Wilson, a deal many expect to be the largest contract a quarterback has ever signed.
The Seahawks dealt for Lynch during the 2010 season, sending a fourth- and fifth-round pick to the Bills in exchange for the running back in October of that year. Since then, Lynch has amassed 5,930 rushing yards and scored 54 touchdowns for the Seahawks. He ran for 1,306 and scored 17 rushing and receiving touchdowns this season.
Seattle has a pair of young backups behind Lynch, Robert Turbin and Christine Michael, but it’s hard to replace the player who has become part of the team’s identity, a centerpiece of the offensive game plan.
