The NFL trade deadline is two weeks away and it's veteran tight ends who are getting the most attention. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams have been fielding calls from teams interested in trading for Vernon Davis and Jared Cook.
Vernon Davis, Jared Cook reportedly garnering trade interest
Veteran tight ends have been the subject of trade interest with the deadline for trades just two weeks away.
Davis, 31, is in the final year of a six-year, $42.7 million deal with the 49ers, but has just eight receptions for 109 yards in 2015. Cook, 28, still has two more seasons after 2015 on the five-year, $35.1 million deal he signed with the Rams, but has been similarly ineffective with just 15 receptions for 169 yards.
With both the 2-3 Rams and 1-4 49ers well behind the 4-1 Arizona Cardinals for the lead in the NFC West, trading away players who aren't contributing at the level of their contract makes sense for a pair of teams that likely won't compete in the postseason.
According to La Canfora, that disconnect in league parity could lead to more trades than usual in 2015:
Several NFL executives believe this could be a more fertile trade deadline than normal, with clubs now adjusted to the later deadline and with there being a growing delineation between the haves and the have nots, with half a dozen teams undefeated and a legion of clubs with one win or less.
That means players like Matt Forte could be shipped off if the Chicago Bears don't feel as though they are competitors when the Nov. 3 trade deadline rolls around.
Only two deadline trades happened in 2014, with Akeem Ayers going from the Tennessee Titans to the New England Patriots and Mark Barron going from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Rams.
