Ben Roethlisberger is a ‘long shot’ to return in Week 7, per report

Roethlisberger is fighting to be back on the field in Week 7, but the team views it as unlikely.

Ben Roethlisberger will not play for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals, but he's pushing hard to be ready for next week when the Steelers travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs. Team officials aren't convinced that's enough time, however.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Roethlisberger is considered a “long shot” to return in Week 7 despite pushing to be back on the field and returning to the practice field before Week 6. He was limited in two sessions before sitting out on Friday and was declared out.

While his time back on the practice field means he’s working his way back, Rapoport said that the team believes he still has a lot of progress to make before he’s ready to return from a knee injury suffered in Week 3.

“Based on what he is doing in practice, which features almost no movement, he’s doing hardly anything, my understanding is that he’s viewed as a long shot for next week,” Rapoport said Sunday on NFL Network’s GameDay Morning. “It was always the early part of his window to come back. He’s going to try, but from what I’m told it seems unlikely that Ben plays next week.”

Roethlisberger is the all-time leader in Steelers history in every major passing category and passed Terry Bradshaw with his 108th win as a starter for the team in Week 3, despite leaving early with an injury against the St. Louis Rams. Roethlisberger needs just 31 more passing yards to reach 40,000 for his career and become the 16th quarterback in NFL history to reach the mark.

With Roethlisberger out, the Steelers have relied on Michael Vick as the team’s starter, who has led the team to a 1-1 record in two starts. Vick has completed 63.8 percent of his passes in relief of Roethlisberger with 365 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
