Giants TE Daniel Fells released from hospital after battling MRSA

He’ll need more surgery, but there is optimism for Fells.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells will likely not have to have his foot amputated, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Fells is battling a severe MRSA infection, primarily located in his foot, that has necessitated seven total surgeries. There are more surgeries still on the way, but his scans and cultures are "looking good," according to Rapoport.

The Giants announced Tuesday that Feels was released from the hospital.

Amputation of the foot was considered a possibility throughout Fells’ treatment, given its severity. Fells went to the emergency room with a fever and an infection, and at one point the infection spread to his lungs. But the infection is clearing up, and the two remaining surgeries are to ensure that everything will heal properly in the end.

This is obviously great news for Fells, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve by the Giants. His football future is still in doubt, and is not the main concern at this stage. He had an infected bone removed from his foot and there is permanent damage. There were already reports that the infection will likely force him to retire.

Now that Fells has been released from the hospital, he’ll have a nurse and physical therapist for at least a few months.

Fells has been in the league since 2008, and is in his second year with the Giants. He’s caught 114 passes for 1,334 yards and 12 touchdowns in 89 career games. He had just six catches for 60 yards with the Giants before the infection this season.
