Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan announced that wide receiver Sammy Watkins won’t play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Watkins is dealing with an ankle injury he sustained against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 6, and he was seen on crutches following the team’s loss.
Sammy Watkins won’t play in Bills-Jags matchup in London
Watkins hurt his ankle last week against the Bengals.
Watkins traveled with the team to London, where they’ll play the Jaguars early on Sunday morning, but he was still in a walking boot and on crutches when he arrived. He was considered a long shot to play at Wembley Stadium.
Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor is also out, as is receiver Percy Harvin, which leaves backup EJ Manuel with fewer weapons. Robert Woods and Chris Hogan are the next two receivers on the depth chart.
Before Week 6, Watkins complained about not getting enough targets. He caught four passes for 48 yards, the last of which was the play he was injured on -- a 22-yard touchdown catch from Manuel.
Watkins is Buffalo’s top receiver, though he missed two games earlier in the month with a calf injury. As a rookie in 2014, he recorded 65 receptions for 982 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games. Watkins has caught just 11 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns so far this season.
