Tony Romo is out with an injury and the Dallas Cowboys have decided that Brandon Weeden has shown enough -- it's time for the Matt Cassel show in Dallas. Weeden made the start against the New England Patriots in Week 5 and threw for just 187 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. The Cowboys put up just six points in the game, and were never threatening the Patriots on the scoreboard.
Cowboys vs. Giants 2015 picks and predictions: Experts favor New York in Matt Cassel’s Dallas debut
Matt Cassel will be starting for the Cowboys, and experts mostly agree that he won’t be able to lead them to victory over the Giants on Sunday.
Cassel, a recent acquisition, wasn't familiar enough with the playbook to make the start in that game, but after a bye week to prepare, he's now going to be starting against the NFC East rival New York Giants on Sunday.
Despite the fact that the Cowboys are 2-3 and the Giants are 3-3, this matchup has huge implications within the division. None of the four teams within it are playing well at this point, with both the Giants and Eagles atop the division at .500. Washington is at the bottom with a 2-4 record. A win against the Giants would be huge for the Cowboys.
Cassel will get his first start of the year against one of the league’s worst defenses. New York ranks 28th in the league in total defense, and 31st in the league in pass defense, above only the Oakland Raiders. The Giants let a poor 49ers team score 27 points on them, and allowed 27 against the Eagles in their last outing.
Engaged in a quarterback battle with EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor throughout the offseason, Cassel was eventually relegated to a third-string role with the Buffalo Bills. He last played with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, completing 57.7 percent of his passes for 425 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots, the team that drafted him in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
There doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of faith in Cassel, at least as far as experts are concerned. Over at CBS Sports, six of the eight pickers think the Giants will win. At ESPN, 10 of the 13 panelists are also going with the Giants to win it.
There’s a bit more of a split here at SB Nation, where five of our experts are picking the Giants. That leaves three who think the Cowboys will win.
