Melvin Gordon is active against the Raiders

Melvin Gordon’s ankle injury will not keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is active against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Gordon is dealing with an ankle injury that limited him significantly in the team's last game against the Green Bay Packers. Gordon had just seven carries in that game, putting up 29 yards with no touchdowns.

Gordon, a first-round pick in this year’s draft, has run well at times this season but has yet to find the end zone or really have a defining game. He has 78 carries for 299 yards with no touchdowns and 13 receptions for 86 yards. He’s the starting running back for the Chargers and he fits the mold of a feature back in the NFL, but he hasn’t broken massive runs for the most part.

Unfortunately, Gordon has four fumbles this season, three of which have resulted in turnovers. Two of them came against the Packers and caused him to be benched. The Chargers will keep him on a short leash even when he’s active given the fumbles.

Danny Woodhead is the second running back on the depth chart and has 44 carries for 162 yards with two touchdowns this season. Woodhead also has another 332 yards receiving and should see his playing time increase regardless of Gordon's injury. The two have a similar yards per carry average this season, with Gordon putting up a 3.8 average and Woodhead sitting at 3.7 yards.
